NAJAF, Iraq — Authorities in the Iraqi city of Najaf, a major religious center for Shia Islam, have suspended operations by Iranian airlines as part of the implementation of US sanctions.
The measure affects flights between Najaf and Iran and will
remain in effect until further notice, according to Iraqi airport officials.
The decision represents a further impact of US sanctions on
the Iranian aviation sector and affects a route of particular importance to
both countries, due to the constant flow of pilgrims, travelers, and students
moving between Iraq and Iran.
Najaf receives numerous Iranian visitors each year who come
to its religious sites, so the suspension of flights could lead to changes in
travel plans and force some passengers to use ground transportation.
Iraqi authorities indicated that the suspension is in
response to instructions related to compliance with US measures against Iranian
airlines.
