WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump signed an executive order requiring federal government agencies to use the term “Super Intelligence” (SI) instead of “Artificial Intelligence” (AI) in their official communications.
The measure formalizes a proposal Trump had already made
during his speech before the United Nations General Assembly on September 22,
when he announced that the United States would officially use the term “Super
Intelligence” to refer to technology.
According to the White House, the order instructs various
executive branch departments and agencies to use “Super Intelligence” and “SI”
in official correspondence, public communications, policy documents, and other
documents not mandated by law.
The change is part of the Trump administration’s technology
strategy, which is also promoting the use of artificial intelligence systems
within the federal government. The new America.gov portal, for example,
incorporates what the White House calls “Super Intelligence” to facilitate
citizens’ access to government information and services.
The decision does not mean that the term “Artificial
Intelligence” will cease to be used in the international scientific or
technological community. It is a guideline for the terminology used by the U.S.
Executive Branch in the areas specified by the order.
Trump had previously defended the change during his address
to the UN, where he stated that the technology known as artificial intelligence
would henceforth be called “Super Intelligence.”
