TOKYO—The Japanese capital set a new historic record by recording rainfall for 34 consecutive days, the longest streak since the city began keeping meteorological records in 1886. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the period began on August 27 and reached 34 days on Tuesday, September 29.
The new record surpasses the previous record of 33
consecutive days, recorded between June 27 and July 29, 2019. The record is
kept at the weather station located in Kitanomaru Park, in the Chiyoda Ward. It
is worth noting that the record considers all types of rainfall: there were
even 10 days during the streak with less than 0.5 millimeters of rain recorded.
The heaviest rainfall during this period occurred on
September 21, when 156 millimeters accumulated due to the approach of Typhoon
Dujuan, the 25th typhoon of the season in Japan.
Meteorological authorities predict that the rain will
continue in Tokyo for the next few days, so the streak could last even longer
before conditions begin to stabilize.
The phenomenon is particularly unusual because such a
prolonged sequence of rainy days is usually associated with the rainy season,
while a streak of this duration between late summer and autumn is rare.
