WASHINGTON—US President Donald Trump escalated his rhetoric regarding the trade relationship with Canada, asserting that his country will ultimately prevail in the negotiations.
During his remarks, Trump maintained that the United States
“will win everything” and predicted that Canada will eventually approach
Washington to seek an agreement. According to the president, Canadian officials
will eventually say to him, “Sir, we are very sorry.”
Trump also referenced Lake Ontario, which his administration
ordered to be officially renamed “Lake America” in US federal government
documents and records. The executive order, signed on August 27, mandates that
federal agencies update their maps, documents, and databases to use the new
name.
The name change comes amid escalating trade tensions between
Washington and Ottawa. Trump has repeatedly questioned the trade relationship
with Canada and defended tariffs as a tool to boost production within the
United States.
Trump's remarks come as both governments continue trade
negotiations amid heightened tensions over tariffs and retaliatory measures
between the two countries.
