NEW YORK—Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif thanked US President Donald Trump for his intervention during the 2025 India-Pakistan conflict, stating that his actions prevented the confrontation from escalating into a much larger conflict.
Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly, Sharif
highlighted what he called Trump's timely intervention when the two South Asian
nuclear powers were on the brink of a larger-scale confrontation.
The Pakistani prime minister credited Trump with helping to
prevent the loss of "hundreds of millions of lives" in the region and
praised his leadership during those tense times.
The remarks refer to the military escalation between India
and Pakistan in May 2025, following an attack in Kashmir that triggered a
series of military actions and reprisals between the two countries.
Sharif also warned about the need to prevent South Asia from
finding itself in a similar situation again and linked this concern to the
search for a solution to the Kashmir conflict.
