WASHINGTON – Oil markets rallied after President Donald Trump rejected an Iranian truce proposal, further increasing uncertainty about the future of the conflict in the Middle East.
Brent crude rose above $107 a barrel, while West Texas
Intermediate (WTI) also advanced, amid fears that tensions could disrupt
international oil supplies.
One of the main areas of concern is the Strait of Hormuz, a
strategic shipping lane for oil and gas. Any prolonged disruption in the area
could reduce the supply available on international markets and put downward
pressure on prices.
The rejection of the Iranian proposal also lowered
expectations of an immediate de-escalation of the conflict. Trump, for his
part, has indicated that talks with Tehran could continue, although no
agreement has yet been reached to end hostilities.
The behavior of oil is once again generating concern in the
markets due to the possible impact that a prolonged period of high prices could
have on fuels, transportation and inflation internationally.
