FRANCE—A group of fishermen blocked a major oil depot in Fos-sur-Mer, in southern France, for several hours to protest the sharp increase in fuel prices and the deterioration of their working conditions.
The protest began around 3:00 a.m. on September 15, when
about 50 people blocked access to the depot, located in one of the main
industrial and port areas of the Marseille region.
The protesters demanded a meeting with the Minister of
Fisheries, Catherine Chabaud, and denounced the rising operating costs facing
the sector, particularly due to fuel prices, as well as an increasing burden of
administrative and regulatory requirements.
The blockade was lifted shortly before 10:00 a.m., with the
intervention of security forces. The prefecture reported that the depot was
evacuated and subsequently resumed operations.
The protest is part of a broader mobilization of fishermen
in southern France. Fishing industry organizations from Occitanie,
Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, and Corsica have launched joint actions to demand
solutions to rising operating costs and deteriorating working conditions.
The sector's pressure comes against a backdrop of soaring
fuel prices in France. This week also saw further actions by fishermen in other
parts of the Mediterranean coast, including the blockade of an oil depot in
Frontignan.
The fishermen's movement also coincides with a wave of
mobilizations across various sectors in France, where unions and workers have
expressed their concern about the rising cost of living and energy.
