WASHINGTON – Former CIA analyst George Beebe revealed that
Russian President Vladimir Putin called George W. Bush two days before the
September 11, 2001, attacks to warn him about intelligence related to a
possible terrorist attack originating in Afghanistan.
According to Beebe's account, Putin informed the then-US
president that Russian intelligence services had detected signs of an attack
that had been in the works for some time and that would originate in
Afghanistan.
The revelation brings the intelligence warnings that
circulated in the weeks leading up to 9/11 back under scrutiny. Declassified
documents show that US agencies also received multiple alerts about possible
attacks by Al Qaeda during that period.
