The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that they carried
out a precision strike in the central Gaza Strip, an operation in which,
according to the Israeli military, Omar Ahmed Abu Qasem, identified as the
commander of a sniper unit within one of the Hamas battalions, was killed.
According to the IDF statement, Abu Qasem was considered an
operational commander involved in various armed actions against Israeli forces
since the beginning of the conflict. Military authorities indicated that he
played a significant role in attacks against forces deployed in Gaza and was
among the priority targets of their military operations.
The Israeli military also asserted that, in recent weeks,
the alleged commander had participated in efforts to rebuild Hamas's military
capabilities, including the reorganization of combat units and the planning of
new offensive actions. According to the official IDF version, these activities
took place despite the commitments stemming from the ceasefire, and therefore
they maintain that they represented a threat to the security of their troops
and the Israeli civilian population.
The Israel Defense Forces stated that they will continue to
conduct targeted operations against members of armed groups that, in their
view, pose an immediate risk to national security. In this regard, they
reiterated that their military strategy includes the identification and
neutralization of targets considered to be of high operational value, with the
aim of preventing the reorganization of Hamas's military capabilities and
preventing future attacks.
