Washington, D.C. – U.S. President Donald Trump called for
lower gasoline prices to reach $2.50 per gallon, arguing that lower fuel costs
would help alleviate the economic pressure on families and businesses across
the country.
Following this announcement, Treasury Secretary Scott
Bessent stated in a television interview that the federal government is closely
monitoring energy markets and warned that authorities will be vigilant against
any practices that could lead to unjustified price increases.
The official indicated that the administration will continue
to monitor fuel prices and reiterated that, should anticompetitive or
anti-competitive practices be detected, the appropriate authorities will act in
accordance with their powers under U.S. law. The statements come at a time when
gasoline prices remain a major concern for millions of consumers, due to their
impact on the cost of transportation, food, and other goods and services.
