Republican Congressman Chip Roy intensified his criticism of
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, stating that he should be denaturalized and
deported from the United States following the controversy surrounding a
scheduled meeting between a city official and Iran's ambassador to the United
Nations.
The congressman's remarks came after it was revealed that
the city's Commissioner of International Affairs had arranged a diplomatic
meeting with the Iranian representative. However, the meeting did not take
place, as it was canceled following intervention by the State Department, led
by Secretary Marco Rubio, amid ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran.
Roy maintained that the incident reflects, in his view,
conduct incompatible with U.S. interests and called for federal authorities to
review the mayor's immigration status. His statements, however, represent a
personal political stance and do not imply the start of an official procedure
to revoke Mamdani's citizenship or deport him.
The controversy has fueled the political debate about the
role of local governments in foreign policy matters, a power that primarily
belongs to the federal government. The case has also generated renewed
criticism among Republican lawmakers toward the New York mayor's
administration.
