LOS ANGELES—The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office announced that Nick Reiner, son of renowned director and actor Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner, will not face the death penalty if convicted of his parents' murder.
Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced Tuesday that his office decided not to seek capital punishment after reviewing the case and considering, among other factors, the opinions expressed by Nick Reiner's siblings.
Reiner, 33, is accused of killing his parents in their Los Angeles home in December 2015. He pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder, which include special circumstances related to multiple homicides and the allegation that he waited for his victims before the attack.
With the prosecution's decision, life imprisonment without the possibility of parole is now the maximum sentence he could face if convicted.
The prosecution also reported that Reiner's siblings have requested that the grand jury transcripts remain sealed, arguing that their release could exacerbate the trauma caused by the case. A judge will soon decide whether those documents can be made public.
The trial is not expected before 2027. In the meantime, the legal proceedings will continue, and Reiner maintains his innocence.
