New York, September 21, 2026 – Brazilian President Luiz
Inácio Lula da Silva held meetings this Monday with New York City Mayor Zohran
Mamdani and U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, on the eve of his participation in the
opening of the United Nations General Assembly.
The meeting with Mamdani took place at the residence of
Brazil's representative to the UN and was requested by the mayor himself. They
discussed issues related to poverty, the cost of living, and public policies
aimed at the most vulnerable sectors of society.
Later, Lula met with leftist Bernie Sanders, an independent
senator from Vermont and a leading figure in the progressive wing of U.S.
politics. The meeting also took place in New York, ahead of the speech that the
Brazilian president will deliver this Tuesday, September 22, before the UN
General Assembly.
Criticism of Trump's Tariffs
As part of his agenda in New York, Lula also gave an
interview to journalist Christiane Amanpour of CNN International, in which he
again questioned the tariffs imposed by the administration of US President
Donald Trump on Brazilian products.
Lula stated that the tariffs are unfounded and indicated
that Brazil seeks to keep negotiations open with Washington. The president also
indicated that his government does not intend to start a trade war and is
committed to dialogue to resolve differences.
