WASHINGTON—The US military carried out another attack on a vessel in the Caribbean Sea that, according to US Southern Command, was involved in drug trafficking activities. The operation left four people dead.
The attack occurred on Saturday and is part of the military
campaign that the Trump administration is waging against vessels that
Washington links to drug trafficking organizations in the Caribbean and the
eastern Pacific.
Southern Command reported that intelligence considered
reliable had confirmed the vessel's active participation in drug trafficking
operations. However, authorities did not publicly provide details about the
identities of the deceased, the exact location of the attack, or additional
evidence about the cargo the ship was carrying.
The operation comes just days after another US attack in the
Caribbean that left three dead, according to military officials. With this
latest incident, the number of people killed in U.S. attacks on vessels
suspected of carrying drugs has risen to at least 231 in 69 operations,
according to reports released Sunday.
The Trump administration maintains that these operations are
part of a strategy to combat groups it labels as “narco-terrorists” and to curb
the flow of drugs into the United States.
The U.S. government continues the operations as part of its
efforts against drug trafficking organizations, while authorities have provided
limited information about the specific circumstances of each attack.
