WASHINGTON— Senate Majority Leader John Thune issued a
warning about what he believes could happen if Democrats regain control of the
upper chamber in the upcoming elections.
Thune stated that a Democratic victory would allow left-wing
groups to push an agenda that includes tax increases, socialist-leaning
policies, and a potential expansion of the U.S. Supreme Court.
During his remarks, the senator referred to Talarico, whom
he presented as a representative of that political current, and questioned his
attempts to distance himself from some of those proposals. “That won’t change
if he gets to the Senate and votes,” he asserted.
Thune affirmed that the so-called “far left” would be the
force that dictates the legislative agenda if Democrats regain control of the
Senate. In his view, among the priorities would be raising taxes on Americans
and promoting socialists.
The Republican also pointed to the possibility of expanding
the number of Supreme Court justices as one of the main objectives of that
political sector. “Expanding the Supreme Court, that’s the far left’s agenda,”
he stated.
Thune’s remarks come amid growing political confrontation
between the right and the far left in the lead-up to the midterm elections, in
which control of the Senate will be a key objective for both Republicans and
Democrats. The outcome will largely determine which party will have greater
capacity to advance its legislative agenda during the next term.
