WASHINGTON—The White House has proposed new legislation
aimed at preventing future presidents from reversing the current immigration
and border policies implemented by Donald Trump.
The initiative, dubbed the “Anti-Invasions Act,” seeks to
establish greater legal obstacles to modifying the measures adopted regarding
border security. Trump himself asserted that the bill would aim to make it
“legally impossible” for a future president to “reopen the border.”
The proposal was presented while the US president focused
much of his speech on immigration during the Republican midterm convention held
in Dallas. Before members and supporters of his party, Trump defended his
immigration policies and emphasized the need to maintain greater control over
the border.
The White House proposal represents an effort to make some
of the current administration's border policies long-term measures, reducing
the possibility of their modification by subsequent administrations.
Immigration remains a central theme in the political
discourse of Trump and his administration, having been a key campaign promise
that he has fully delivered on. The initiative must now proceed through the
legislative process, where it is expected to face intense political debate from
Democrats.
