WASHINGTON—Republican Senator Ted Cruz launched harsh
criticism against sectors of the American left and warned of what he called a
new and dangerous alliance between communist and Islamist groups within the Democratic
Party.
During his remarks, Cruz used the expression "reds and
greens" to refer to this ideological convergence and maintained that both
movements are united, in his view, by a series of common enemies and
objectives.
"They are united because they share the same
enemies," stated the senator, who accused these sectors of maintaining a
hostile stance toward Christians, Jews, capitalism, the Constitution, and the
United States.
Cruz also linked his criticism to his own family history. He
pointed out that for him, communism is not merely a theoretical issue, because,
as he recounted, members of his family were victims of persecution,
imprisonment, and torture under the communist regime in Cuba.
In his remarks, the legislator listed various historical
episodes and governments that exemplify the consequences of communist regimes,
mentioning the former Soviet Union, Mao Zedong's China, Cambodia, North Korea,
Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Cuba.
The senator also directed his criticism at Islamism, which
he blamed for practices and acts of violence that, he argued, range from the
imposition of specific religious norms to honor killings and terrorist attacks.
Among the events mentioned by Cruz were the attacks of September 11, 2001, and
the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2003.
Cruz's statements come amid an intense political dispute in
the United States regarding the ideological orientation of the Democratic Party
and the growth of progressive factions within its ranks.
