Texas—Texas Governor Greg Abbott has opened a new front of
controversy by questioning the facilities for Muslim ritual ablutions—known as
wudu—at airports in the state and warning that these spaces should not receive
preferential treatment for religious reasons.
The dispute centers primarily on Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) and
George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) airports in Houston. Abbott requested
federal investigations and threatened to withdraw state subsidies if it is
determined that the facilities represent preferential treatment for one
religion.
In the case of DFW, the airport ultimately canceled the
project to install additional foot-washing stations after political pressure
from the governor. The airport clarified that the proposal was still under
evaluation and would have been funded with the airport's own revenue, not
taxpayer money.
In Houston, however, an ablution facility already exists in
Terminal D, inaugurated in 2024 alongside a prayer space. Mayor John Whitmire
defended its continued presence, noting that the facilities are open to any
passenger, employee, or visitor, regardless of their religion.
Abbott maintains that airports managed by government
entities must maintain strict religious neutrality and argues that providing
facilities specifically designated for a religious practice could constitute
discrimination.
The governor has also publicly defended the presence of the
Ten Commandments in public spaces in Texas. In 2005, when he was the state's
attorney general, Abbott argued before the U.S. Supreme Court for the continued
presence of a monument bearing the Ten Commandments on the grounds of the Texas
Capitol; the court ultimately upheld its continued presence.
It should be noted that the claim that Abbott ordered the
removal of all existing Muslim foot-washing stations at Texas airports is not
supported by the sources consulted. What has been confirmed so far is his
threat to review or withdraw state funds, the request for federal
investigations, and the cancellation of the new facility project in DFW.
