Democrats appear to be politicizing another measure by
President Donald Trump, this time alleging that he gave preferential treatment
to South African refugees because they were white.
On Monday, the Trump administration received 59 white South
Africans who were granted refugee status in the United States, citing racial
discrimination as the basis for their admission. However, the measure drew
criticism from Democrats, who focused the issue on race.
While Trump has restricted refugee admissions from many
non-white populations globally, he announced in February that the United States
would offer resettlement to Afrikaners, descendants of primarily Dutch
settlers, after many claimed they faced increasing discrimination in the
majority-Black country.
Asked about his February executive order granting refugee
status to white South Africans, Trump said Monday, "It's genocide that's
going on." Reuters and other media outlets blundered, claiming Trump had
no evidence to support his claim.
