Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has taken a firm stance regarding the role the European Union should play in relation to its member states. He reiterated that the European Union was conceived as a mechanism for cooperation among sovereign nations, whose primary objective is to serve their interests, not to replace their decision-making capacity or impose directives upon them.
In this regard, Orbán emphasized that Hungary maintains full
autonomy in conducting its internal affairs, rejecting any form of interference
from European institutions. He stressed that the country's fundamental
decisions must stem exclusively from the will of its citizens, expressed
through its own democratic processes.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister underlined that his
government does not recognize the authority of European officials whom he
considers to be beyond the direct control of voters, insisting that the only
legitimate political responsibility lies with the Hungarian people. This vision
reinforces his discourse in favor of power emanating from and managed by the
citizens of each country and clearly defines the scope that, in his opinion,
European integration should have.
