Weidel Questions Aid to Ukraine and Scrutinizes Zelensky's Finances

Berlin— Alice Weidel, leader of the German Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, has once again questioned the allocation of billions of euros to Ukraine and placed transparency in the management of resources allocated to Volodymyr Zelensky's government at the center of the political debate.

Weidel's statements and positions have fueled an intense debate in Germany about the cost of aid to Ukraine for taxpayers. The German politician maintains that Berlin must carefully review the resources allocated to the conflict and ensure that public money is used transparently.

References to the so-called Pandora Papers, an international journalistic investigation that revealed in 2021 corporate structures and offshore companies linked to leaders and individuals close to the Ukrainian president, have also gained prominence in the debate.

The AfD has used this background to reinforce its demand for stricter controls on funds allocated to Ukraine. In January 2026, Weidel and other members of her party introduced a bill in the Bundestag questioning corruption and demanding a review of German aid to Kyiv.

The issue has sparked a heated political confrontation in Germany. While the AfD insists that taxpayers must receive guarantees about the destination of every euro sent abroad, its critics argue that some of the accusations circulating on social media mix proven facts with unsubstantiated claims.

Thus, the controversy over money allocated to Ukraine remains one of the most contentious political issues in Germany, while pressure mounts to increase oversight of public funds earmarked for the conflict.
