Ukrainian arrested in Nord Stream case reportedly worked on film about pipeline sabotage

GERMANY—A Ukrainian citizen arrested in connection with the sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipelines was reportedly arrested while working on the production of a Hollywood film that deals with the attack on the energy infrastructure.

According to a report published this Thursday, the man was working on the film, starring actors Adrien Brody and Sean Penn, when he was detained by authorities.

The case is particularly relevant due to the coincidence between the detainee's work and the subject matter of the film, which focuses on one of the most controversial episodes of the war between Russia and Ukraine.

The Nord Stream pipelines, which transported natural gas from Russia to Germany via the Baltic Sea, were damaged by explosions in September 2022. International investigations have sought to determine who was behind the sabotage and what their motivations were. The arrest of the Ukrainian citizen is part of the judicial investigations seeking to clarify the involvement of individuals connected to the attack. Authorities must now determine the extent of his alleged involvement and whether there is evidence directly linking him to the sabotage.

The film on which the detainee supposedly worked has thus unexpectedly become embroiled in the controversy surrounding one of the most investigated sabotage cases in recent years.
