Iowa Funeral Directors Warn of Unusual Findings in Bodies and Call for Official Investigation

A member of the Iowa Funeral Directors Association's Board of Directors has publicly called on authorities to investigate the presence of structures described as "white and fibrous" found in bodies during funeral procedures.

Dana Goodell, a director of the state association representing funeral professionals in Iowa, stated in an interview broadcast on the Daily Pulse program that, according to the results of a 2025 survey of colleagues in the industry, unusual formations continue to be reported in some bodies prepared for funeral services.

According to Goodell, survey participants noted the persistence of these structures, characterized as white in appearance and fibrous in consistency. Goodell emphasized that the reports come from professionals experienced in embalming and post-mortem handling, which, in his opinion, warrants a more thorough technical review.

The executive maintained that, given the repeated reports of these formations, it is necessary for health authorities and relevant agencies to conduct formal studies to determine the nature of these formations, their possible origin, and whether they pose any health risks.

Goodell emphasized that the goal is not to create alarm, but to promote clarity and scientific support. “What we are seeking is a rigorous investigation,” he stated, stressing the importance of having experts in pathology, forensic medicine, and public health analyze the reported cases.

The Iowa Funeral Directors Association represents establishments and professionals dedicated to providing funeral services in the state. Goodell explained that its Board of Directors has a responsibility to convey the concerns of the industry to the appropriate authorities when patterns they consider unusual emerge.

To date, no official conclusions have been released regarding the nature of the aforementioned structures. The executive's main request is that the authorities review the survey data and determine whether a scientific investigation is warranted to provide clear answers to both the funeral sector and the general population.
