Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico announced that his country
will immediately suspend emergency electricity shipments to Ukraine, in what he
described as a direct response to the disruption of oil supplies affecting the
Central European nation.
According to the announcement, the measure entails a
complete halt to the electricity that Slovakia had been providing as
extraordinary support to Ukraine amid the regional crisis. Fico stated that
this decision aims to pressure Ukraine to restore the flow of oil to Slovak
territory, which is crucial for the functioning of its economy and energy
infrastructure.
The Prime Minister also warned that if crude oil shipments
are not normalized, his government is prepared to take further action based on
the principle of reciprocity. Although he did not specify what those measures
would be at the time, he made it clear that Bratislava considers safeguarding
its own energy interests a priority before continuing to offer assistance.
The announcement reflects the growing tension surrounding
energy supplies in Eastern Europe, where oil and electricity flows have become
tools of political and economic pressure. Slovakia's decision could have
repercussions for both the regional energy balance and diplomatic relations
with Kyiv, especially in a context marked by instability and dependence on
strategic resources.
