The new Somos México party announced its declaration of principles, program of action, and national leadership after fulfilling the requirements established by the electoral authority to obtain its formal registration.
On November 24, 2024, the possibility of creating a
political force to challenge Morena in the lead-up to 2027 was raised. In that
context, the then National Civic Front announced its intention to undergo the
process of becoming a political party under the name Somos México.
Fifteen months later, the organization reported that it had
held 246 assemblies and registered 290,000 members, figures that far exceed the
minimum required by law. With these numbers, there would be no legal grounds
for the electoral authority to deny its registration.
The new political force officially presented its declaration
of principles and program of action, in addition to electing its national
leadership and forming its citizen advisory council.
Guadalupe Acosta Naranjo will assume the party presidency,
while Cecilia Soto will serve as general secretary. Both have been actively
involved in building the project, with the aim of establishing a competitive
electoral alternative.
Ideologically, Somos México clearly defines itself as
belonging to the social democratic and democratic right. It also clearly
delineates its main political adversary: the National Regeneration Movement
(MORENA), which it accuses of authoritarian practices and maintaining ties with
organized crime.
During the event, a list of figures with experience in
public service was also presented, who could strengthen the party's structure
and its national standing.
According to exit polls from the 2024 elections, the middle
class voted six to four in favor of the so-called Fourth Transformation (4T),
while beneficiaries of social programs voted for it by a ratio of seven to
three. For Somos México, these segments represent strategic areas for electoral
growth.
With the organizational work carried out over the past year
and the formalization of its national structure, the new party is positioning
itself as an actor that will seek to influence the political landscape leading
up to 2027.
