CALIFORNIA — A Sacramento man was arrested and charged with the murder of his wife, Jasmine Gill, after authorities identified her charred remains in a wooded area of El Dorado County, local officials reported.
The case took an unexpected turn when Gurinder Gill, the
victim's husband, initially told investigators that Immigration and Customs
Enforcement (ICE) agents had abducted his wife while she was outside collecting
mail in front of their home.
However, after consulting with immigration authorities,
detectives confirmed that no such operation had taken place at that residence.
As the investigation progressed, they also detected inconsistencies in the
man's statements.
Jasmine had last been seen on September 30, 2016, while her
disappearance was reported by a cousin on October 4. One day after she was last
seen, on October 1, charred human remains were found in El Dorado County and
later identified as those of the woman.
Investigators also discovered that the couple was going
through a divorce and a custody battle over their son.
Gurinder Gill was arrested on October 14 and faces murder
charges. He remains in the Sacramento County Jail without bail, according to
authorities.
The case has caused shock due to the circumstances of the
disappearance and the initial version of events provided by the now-accused.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to clarify the circumstances of
the crime.
The investigation took a decisive turn when evidence
contradicted the version of events regarding alleged ICE involvement and led to
the arrest of the victim's husband. The accused will face the corresponding
legal proceedings.
