US President Donald Trump expressed his support for the
possibility of a unified Ireland during a meeting with Irish Prime Minister
Micheál Martin in Dublin.
IRELAND - During a meeting this morning in Dublin with Prime
Minister Micheál Martin, US President Donald Trump stated that he would like to
see a unified Ireland.
The statement brings back to the forefront one of the most
sensitive political and territorial issues in the British Isles: the division
between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, the latter being part of
the United Kingdom.
The constitutional future of Northern Ireland continues to
be a subject of profound political debate. While nationalist and separatist
groups support the possibility of reunification with the Republic of Ireland,
unionists argue that the region should remain within the United Kingdom.
The position expressed by Trump during his meeting with
Martin could generate particular interest due to the political weight of the
United States in the recent history of the peace process in Northern Ireland.
The Good Friday Agreement of 1998 largely ended decades of
