TEXAS — A protest against ICE immigration operations ended with several demonstrators arrested in downtown Austin after Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) officers used pepper balls to disperse the crowd.
According to CBS Austin, the demonstration lasted for
several hours and resulted in tense moments between protesters and law
enforcement. DPS officers fired several rounds of pepper balls as police
advanced to clear the streets.
Authorities stated that protesters had blocked roads and
that warnings to leave the streets had been issued beforehand. Austin police
subsequently made several arrests.
The use of pepper balls drew criticism from some of the
protesters, who felt the police response escalated tensions. Authorities, for
their part, defended the use of pepper balls as a less-lethal crowd control
tool.
According to CBS Austin, five people were later identified
as having been arrested during the demonstration. Four faced charges related to
obstructing a roadway, and one person was charged with interfering with a
police officer's duties.
The incident occurs amid rising tensions in Austin
surrounding immigration enforcement and protests against ICE. Local authorities
are reviewing the actions taken during the demonstrations and the use of crowd
control measures.
