LOS ANGELES—Paramount may be preparing to leave California amid its ongoing legal battle with state Attorney General Rob Bonta over the proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery.
According to TMZ, officials from the Los Angeles mayor's
office and the California Attorney General's office had been informed that
Paramount would announce its departure from the state. However, the expected
announcement did not materialize, leaving uncertainty as to whether the company
delayed the decision or if there was a change of plans.
Paramount CEO David Ellison had previously warned that the
company could move its operations out of California if an agreement was not
reached with Bonta regarding the antitrust litigation related to the merger
with Warner Bros. Discovery.
Possible destinations, preferably Republican-leaning states,
include Texas, Tennessee, and Georgia. Ellison had indicated that Paramount
would begin withdrawing operations from California starting October 1 if
negotiations did not progress.
The dispute arose after California and 11 other states filed
a lawsuit to try to block the deal, valued at approximately $111 billion.
The situation remains unresolved. In fact, recent court
documents state that Paramount Skydance and Bonta's office will participate in
court-ordered conciliation negotiations on October 14 and 15, keeping the
possibility of an agreement open.
For now, Paramount has not publicly confirmed that it will
leave California. When contacted by TMZ, the company responded "no
comment."
The potential departure would represent a significant change
for Hollywood, where Paramount maintains a long-standing presence, and could
have repercussions for jobs and activities related to film and television
production in Los Angeles.
