NORTH CAROLINA – North Carolina Democratic House candidate
Shelly Kates Headen is facing a storm of disapproval after a social media post
resurfaced in which she claimed that the United States' "only hope"
was to suffer an attack on its own soil, specifically naming Alabama and
Louisiana, states with Republican majorities.
"Preferably Alabama, Louisiana, where the stupid people
live," Headen wrote in the post, which was made approximately a year
earlier and recirculated on the eve of the anniversary of the September 11
attacks.
The North Carolina House Democratic Caucus condemned the
comments "unequivocally" and announced it would withdraw its support
for her candidacy. However, Headen will remain on the ballot for the November
elections, as the deadline to withdraw her candidacy expired on August 20.
The candidate described her posts as moments of anger and
affirmed that she will continue her campaign despite the loss of the alleged
party endorsement. Some citizens have expressed on social media their doubt
that the Democrats will actually withdraw their support for the candidate, who
ultimately revealed a negative sentiment that is not necessarily specific to
any particular group.
