United States sanctions International Criminal Court President Tomoko Akane

WASHINGTON—The United States has imposed sanctions against Tomoko Akane, president of the International Criminal Court (ICC), in a new escalation of tensions between Washington and the Hague-based court.

The measure represents a new episode in the confrontation between the U.S. government and the ICC, particularly over the court's actions related to investigations and arrest warrants involving high-ranking officials.

Some analysts believe that the sanctions against Akane could have diplomatic repercussions and generate further criticism from international organizations and governments that support the independence of the International Criminal Court.

The ICC aims to investigate and prosecute individuals accused of serious international crimes, including genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity, a responsibility it has long since abandoned, analysts agree.

Washington's decision once again places the relationship between the United States and international criminal justice at the center of the debate, as well as the limits of the ICC's jurisdiction and its independence from political pressure.
