US President Donald Trump has once again hardened his stance on the application of Islamic law in the United States, stating that he would support a ban on Sharia law in the country.
During a phone interview with conservative host Glenn Beck,
Trump was asked about potential legislation to prevent Sharia law from becoming
a legal authority in the United States.
“I would absolutely ban that Islamic law,” the president
responded, adding that there are some areas in the country where, in his view,
it is occurring in a limited way.
Trump insisted that the United States must maintain a single
legal system and stated that when authorities detect attempts to apply Sharia
law, they must stop them. “It has to be eliminated. We have one system,” he
said.
The president also referenced European cities such as London
and Paris. He stated that there, Islamic law has become “almost a second way of
life,” describing this situation as something the United States should not
allow.
Trump's statements come amid a growing debate among
conservative sectors in the United States regarding immigration, the
integration of Muslim communities, and the boundaries between religious freedom
and the national legal system.
So far, Trump has not detailed how a potential federal ban
on Sharia law would work, what specific practices it would encompass, or
presented any specific legislative proposal during the interview.
The position expressed by Trump represents, for now, a
political statement in favor of preventing Sharia law from being recognized as
a legal system in the United States, rather than the announcement of a federal
ban already approved.
