Trump lashes out at Mamdani: “We can’t have a communist running New York”

NEW YORK—US President Donald Trump issued a stark warning about New York’s political direction, referring to Zohran Mamdani, whom he labeled a “communist.” Mamdani’s rise to power has been a major target of criticism from both the president and city residents.

“It’s a disaster waiting to happen. WE CANNOT HAVE A COMMUNIST running New York City,” Trump declared, questioning Mamdani’s proposals and political orientation.

The president has maintained a particularly critical stance toward the New York mayor, who has identified himself as associated with the radical left and socialism. Mamdani defines himself as a democratic socialist and is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America.

Mamdani, of Ugandan origin and Indian descent, made history by becoming New York City's first Muslim mayor and one of the youngest politicians to hold the office. His campaign focused primarily on the cost of living, access to housing, and the expansion of public services, and once in office, he is implementing policies that, according to analysts, lean toward socialism.

The confrontation between Trump and Mamdani became one of the main political clashes in New York during the election campaign. The president even warned about the consequences that implementing the then-socialist candidate's policies would have for the city.

Despite Trump's criticism, Mamdani won the mayoral election and took office as mayor of New York City on January 1, 2016, becoming the first Muslim to hold the position.
