MOSCOW, RUSSIA — The director of the U.S. Central
Intelligence Agency (CIA), John Ratcliffe, arrived in Moscow for high-level
meetings with Russian officials, on a trip that had not been publicly
announced.
The visit represents an unusual development in relations
between Washington and Moscow and, if confirmed, would be the first known visit
by a U.S. intelligence chief to the Russian capital since 2021.
The secretive nature of the trip has drawn particular
attention due to the tension that has characterized U.S.-Russian relations in
recent years. The meetings could address security, intelligence, and other
issues of bilateral interest.
Ratcliffe's presence in Moscow also comes at a time when
both governments are holding talks on strategic matters, so the meeting could
have relevance for future negotiations between Washington and the Kremlin.
So far, details of the CIA director's agenda and the
identities of the Russian officials he is scheduled to meet have not been made
