US President Donald J. Trump stated that, until further
notice, damages to ships, their cargo, or any other related property would be
covered using Iranian resources under US government control.
In a publicly released message, the president indicated that
the measure contemplates using Iranian funds or assets held by the United
States to compensate for losses resulting from incidents affecting ships and
related property.
Trump acknowledged that the damages could be considerable,
but maintained that the proposed mechanism represents a "fair and
equitable" solution to address the losses.
The statements come amid heightened tensions between
Washington and Tehran, marked by an exchange of warnings and increased friction
