Snap Inc., the company behind the Snapchat platform, has
launched an ambitious internal transformation process that combines staff
reductions with an intensive adoption of artificial intelligence. According to
recent reports, the company plans to lay off more than 1,000 employees,
representing approximately 16% of its full-time workforce.
This decision is part of a strategy aimed at reducing
operating costs by around $500 million, a goal driven in part by pressure from
the investment fund Irenic Capital Management. The executive team, led by Evan
Spiegel, has stated that the objective is to optimize the company's efficiency
by automating key processes.
One of the most significant changes is the growing role of
artificial intelligence in technological development. Currently, more than half
of the code used by the company is generated with the assistance of AI systems,
reflecting a profound shift in how it produces and maintains its digital
platforms. Similarly, in the area of customer service, automated agents
already handle more than one million internal inquiries each month, reducing
the need for human intervention in repetitive tasks.
This process illustrates a broader trend within the
technology industry, where companies seek to balance innovation with
profitability. The partial replacement of workers by automated systems raises
questions about the future of employment, while simultaneously redefining
operating models in the digital sector.
