New York City law enforcement responded to a new security
incident after a suspicious package was reported near Gracie Mansion, the
mayor's official residence in Manhattan.
The alert prompted a rapid deployment of police and bomb
squads, who cordoned off the area as a precaution while the object was
assessed. The discovery comes just days after a previous incident in which
authorities investigated a suspected bombing attempt that, according to
preliminary reports, had been linked to supporters of the extremist group
Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.
Due to this recent history, the alert was treated with
particular caution. Bomb disposal teams inspected the package to determine
whether it posed a real threat or was a false alarm. Information about the new
discovery was initially shared by the real-time reporting account
ScooterCasterNY, known for documenting emergencies and breaking news in the
city.
To date, authorities are continuing to investigate the
incident and have not publicly confirmed the contents of the package or whether
it is directly related to the attempted attack reported days earlier.
Meanwhile, security measures around Gracie Mansion remain heightened as part of
the preventative protocol.
