US Military Aircraft Conducts Reconnaissance Flight Near Strategic Russian Arctic Bases

Moscow, Russia – A US Navy P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft was detected flying over the Barents Sea, approximately 50 nautical miles off the Russian coast, on an observation mission that included areas near key Northern Fleet bases, including the strategic naval installation Gadzhievo, located near Murmansk.

According to defense sources cited by international media, the aircraft—specialized in surveillance, anti-submarine warfare, and electronic intelligence gathering—conducted several patrol maneuvers in international airspace, albeit in close proximity to the no-fly zone protecting the Russian bases.

The overflight comes amid escalating military tensions between Moscow and Washington, following recent Russian naval exercises in the Arctic and the deployment of US units to Scandinavia and the North Sea.

Military analysts interpret the operation as a demonstration of strategic surveillance by the United States, which seeks to monitor the movements of the Russian nuclear submarine fleet, considered a cornerstone of the Kremlin's deterrent capability.

The Gadzhievo base, the focus of the patrol, houses several Borei-class and Delta IV submarines, equipped with intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads. This facility is considered the epicenter of Russia's nuclear submarine power.
