The US Department of Justice announced that 14 alleged
members of a large migrant smuggling ring have been formally indicted, while
eight others were arrested as part of a federal operation targeting the
smuggling of individuals illegally entering the country. Authorities stated
that the organization is responsible for facilitating the transport of hundreds
of migrants into the United States.
According to the official statement, a federal grand jury in
Las Cruces, New Mexico, returned conspiracy charges against the 14 defendants.
The charges include activities such as transporting, harboring, and illegally
smuggling migrants across various border crossings. The indictment stems from a
long-term investigation involving federal agencies dedicated to combating human
trafficking networks.
Eight of the individuals identified in the indictment were
arrested during operations carried out this week, while the others remain under
investigation by authorities or are subject to arrest warrants. The Department
of Justice emphasized that those involved allegedly operated routes and methods
of transportation designed to evade border surveillance, endangering the safety
of the migrants being transported.
The agency indicated that the case is part of the
government's efforts to dismantle organizations that profit significantly from
human smuggling. Federal prosecutors stated that additional details regarding
the network's structure, the roles played by each defendant, and the scope of
its operations will be presented to the court in the coming weeks.
