A U.S. State Department foreign service officer was dismissed after a hidden camera recording revealed him admitting to an undisclosed romantic relationship with the daughter of a member of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The existence of this relationship, which was not reported to the appropriate security authorities, triggered an internal review, the results of which were made public Wednesday.
The official, identified as Daniel Choi, was the subject of
an administrative investigation initiated by Secretary of State Marco Rubio
after the video was released. According to the State Department, the review
process concluded with a recommendation for his dismissal, a decision that was
subsequently approved by President Donald Trump, as confirmed by the State
Department itself.
Sources within the institution detailed that the omission of
relevant information regarding personal ties to individuals connected to
foreign governments constitutes a violation of security protocols and the
transparency obligations required of diplomatic personnel. The case generated
particular concern due to the sensitive nature of her position and the
strategic importance of the bilateral relationship between the United States
and China.
Although the State Department did not offer further details
about Choi's specific duties or the duration of the unreported relationship, it
did indicate that the investigation will continue to determine whether there
were any additional risks or breaches to institutional security. For now, the
agency asserted that the dismissal is part of the measures taken to “protect
the integrity of the foreign service and ensure strict adherence to security
standards.”
