CIA Director John Ratcliffe revealed new details about
Rahmanullah Lakanwal, the Afghan national identified as the alleged attacker
who opened fire on two members of the National Guard near the White House in
Washington, D.C.
According to information provided by Ratcliffe, Lakanwal
served in Afghanistan with a CIA-backed allied force during operations in the
Kandahar region. The official explained that, following the 2021 military
withdrawal, Lakanwal was one of the individuals transferred to the United
States during the evacuation process managed by President Joe Biden's
administration.
Ratcliffe called the decision a strategic error. “This
individual, and so many others, should never have been allowed into the
country,” he stated, noting that the policies implemented during the evacuation
lacked sufficient security filters. His remarks reignited the debate over
background checks for foreign aid workers and the need to strengthen admission
processes to prevent potential risks.
The case has raised concerns among lawmakers and security
experts, who warn that this type of incident could intensify the national
discussion surrounding immigration procedures, the oversight of evacuated
allies, and the handling of sensitive information in war and relocation
contexts.
