UNIDO KINGDOM.- The British counterintelligence service MI5
has publicly warned MPs about espionage threats from China, Russia, and Iran.
MI5 urged politicians to be on guard against spies who might
resort to blackmail or flattery to obtain information. The intelligence
agency's director, Ken McCallum, emphasized the importance of "protecting
democracy."
This came after the trial of two Britons accused of spying
for China was dismissed due to the government's lack of evidence of a security
threat.
In January 2022, MI5 warned lawmakers about lawyer Christine
Lee, alleging her involvement in interference in the internal affairs of other
countries, which she subsequently unsuccessfully challenged in court.
Despite Prime Minister Keir Starmer's efforts to improve
relations between the UK and China, tensions over espionage persist. The
Chinese embassy denies any allegations of espionage.
