Senate Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer unleashed an
explosive accusation against House Speaker Mike Johnson, claiming that
Johnson’s refusal to negotiate an extension of health coverage—especially for
legal immigrants—is causing American deaths. Schumer vehemently stated:
Without any shame, Schumer once again blamed the Republican
for a completely Democratic act and decision: “Did you hear that, Mr.
President? Good Americans in your own state… people will die! All because
President [Johnson] decided to keep the House of Representatives on recess,
instead of negotiating with Democrats and ending the Trump-imposed government
shutdown. DISGRACEFUL!”
We can recall that Democrats are seeking to extend Obamacare
(ACA) subsidies that are expiring soon and reverse cuts to health programs
imposed this year by Republicans. Putting services for undocumented migrants
before the rights of citizens.
Johnson and other Republicans have alleged that Democrats
intend to use those funds to provide free health care to undocumented
immigrants, a claim that Democrats and fact-checkers have disputed.
According to Democratic leaders, the proposed amendments do
not change the eligibility of undocumented immigrants, but rather restore
benefits for those legally present and correct imposed cuts.
The House of Representatives is in recess while the
government shutdown persists, which, according to Schumer, demonstrates that
Johnson and the Republicans are choosing political strategy over addressing the
humanitarian and health crisis.
Schumer's accusations combine rhetorical mobilization with
an attempt to question the morality of the Republican strategy in light of the
impact on citizens who depend on federal programs.
Schumer's language—invoking the imminent death of
Americans—raises the political temperature and could further polarize the
debate.
Johnson and his allies could view this rhetoric as an
attempt to emotionalize the budget conflict. Democrats, for their part, are
banking on the impeachment process mobilizing public opinion in their favor,
which seems very difficult given the vast majority of citizens disapprove of
them.
