Helsinki — Finnish President Alexander Stubb asserted that
US President Donald Trump is attempting to exert influence in negotiations with
Russia over the war in Ukraine, combining conciliatory gestures with implicit
warnings.
Speaking to local media, Stubb maintained that Trump's
approach appears to be somewhere between diplomatic intent and political
pressure.
"I think President Trump started from a position where
he tried to subtly persuade Russia to stop this war. That was the carrot
method. And, of course, in relation to his latest statements, I see his
influence also emerging. The size of this stick will depend on the president
himself," Stubb noted.
The Finnish president, known for his moderate tone on
international affairs, suggested that Trump's influence could be both
diplomatic and symbolic, depending on the course of his statements and his possible
return to the US political scene.
Stubb's comments come at a time when Europe is closely
watching the president's moves regarding the Ukrainian conflict and his
repeated criticism of the level of financial and military support Washington
has provided to Kyiv.
Finland, which recently joined NATO, has maintained a firm
stance against Russia but has also advocated for channels of dialogue that
would allow for a negotiated solution to the conflict. Stubb's remarks
highlight the diplomatic balance European leaders are trying to maintain in the
face of a possible reconfiguration of US foreign policy.
