House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) on Sunday defended
President Donald Trump's use of the U.S. military to attack three suspected
Iranian nuclear weapons facilities, asserting that he did not need
congressional approval to take the action.
Although Congress approved authorizations for the use of
force in 2001 and 2002, before the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq,
respectively, and although Democrats and some Republicans complained that
Trump's actions violated the Constitution, Johnson asserted that the president
had the legal authority to take actions deemed to be in the interest of the
country's national security.
“The president made the right decision and did what he
needed to do. Congressional leaders were aware of the urgency of this
situation, and the Commander in Chief assessed that the imminent danger
outweighed the time it would take for Congress to act,” Johnson wrote in
