Proof of citizenship measure for voting in federal elections advances in the House of Representatives

The House of Representatives is taking steps again to require proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections, revitalizing an initiative Republicans consider crucial to protecting the integrity of U.S. elections.

House Speaker Mike Johnson announced Monday that the chamber will vote again on the SAVE Act (Protecting American Voter Eligibility Act). The bill passed the House last year but was blocked in the Democratic-controlled Senate.

“American citizens, and only American citizens, should decide American elections,” Johnson posted on X. “House Republicans are determined to put this common-sense idea into practice with the SAVE Act, which establishes safeguards to prevent non-citizens from abusing our democratic process.”

Democrats argue that the legislation is unnecessary, noting that federal law already prohibits non-citizens from voting in federal elections.
