Archbishop Elpidophoros of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of
America praised President Trump, calling him Constantine the Great.
On Monday, to commemorate Greek Independence Day, also known
as the Greek Revolution Celebration, Elpidophoros spoke alongside the president
at the White House. The event commemorates the beginning of the Greek
Revolution in 1821, which paved the way for Greece's independence from the
Ottoman Empire after nearly 400 years of rule.
Standing next to Trump, Elpidophoros praised the president,
calling him one of Orthodoxy's most admired leaders.
"With your leadership, you embody the values of our
Christian faith and love for the Gospel. I am reminded of the great Roman
Emperor Constantine the Great, who founded and built the magnificent city of
Constantinople, my hometown, known today as Istanbul," he said, drawing
cheers when he mentioned Constantine.
