Political tension in Brazil has increased after Senator Flávio Bolsonaro reported that the Federal Police notified him to hand over his passports and informed him that he is prohibited from leaving the country. The measure was ordered by Justice Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Federal Court and was made public on Monday, October 26, 2026.
The legislator recounted that he received the notification
upon leaving a visit to his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is
under house arrest. Flávio questioned the judicial decision and maintained that
it is an attempt at political intimidation, although he affirmed that he will
hand over his documents and defend himself through legal channels.
According to information published by Brazilian media, the
restriction is part of an ongoing investigation into alleged irregular
financial operations and suspicions of money laundering, similar to what
happened to his father, who was robbed of the presidency and ultimately
imprisoned. The ruling remains under seal, so not all of its grounds are
publicly known.
The decision has generated controversy due to its timing,
just one day after the second round of the presidential elections, in which
Flávio Bolsonaro is widely considered a victim of election theft, both within
and outside of Brazil.
Amid the uncertainty, reports have also circulated about the
senator's possible arrest in the coming hours. However, so far, the information
consulted confirms the surrender of his passports and a travel ban, but does
not allow for the assertion of an imminent arrest warrant.
The case keeps public attention focused on the questionable
role of the judiciary and due process in Brazil. Flávio Bolsonaro has also
announced that he will seek to challenge the election results, while his
statements and the court decisions fuel a scenario of intense political
confrontation in the country.
