An unusual pink dolphin was spotted swimming in waters near
Qantab Beach in Muscat, the capital of Oman. The sighting, recorded in
mid-October, attracted attention on social media after images of the animal
alongside other gray dolphins circulated online.
The dolphin's peculiar appearance sparked the curiosity of
users and marine life enthusiasts, as pink dolphins are usually associated with
species that inhabit the rivers of South America, especially the Amazon basin.
However, the animal observed in Oman lives in marine waters,
and its species has not yet been conclusively identified. Among the
possibilities mentioned are Risso's dolphin and Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin
species, some of which can have light or pinkish tones.
The coloration could be related to natural skin
characteristics, blood circulation, or changes in pigmentation. However, to
date, there is no scientific confirmation to determine the exact cause of the
dolphin's color.
The sighting has sparked interest in Oman's marine
biodiversity, whose waters are home to various cetacean species. Experts
emphasize the importance of observing these animals without chasing them or
disturbing their natural behavior.
Although the images have generated considerable excitement,
the dolphin's definitive identification is still pending expert evaluation.
