NICOSIA, CYPRUS—Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides highlighted the potential of relations between his country and the United States and praised President Donald Trump's negotiating style in an interview that was later shared by the US president on his Truth Social platform.
Christodoulides stated that "the sky's the limit"
for cooperation between Cyprus and the United States and described Washington
as his country's most important partner.
The Cypriot president also emphasized what he considers a
particular advantage of Trump in international negotiations: his position is
clear, and, according to Christodoulides, his counterparts know what to expect
from him.
"Whether you like it or not, you know where you
stand," the Cypriot president noted, explaining that this clarity allows
for negotiations to take place even when significant differences exist, and for
solutions to be sought through dialogue.
Christodoulides also raised the need to deepen cooperation
between Cyprus and the United States in areas such as defense, security,
intelligence, and energy. The Cypriot president noted that both countries share
interests and positions on various regional issues and maintained that Europe
cannot afford a rupture in the transatlantic relationship.
He also expressed interest in modifying the mechanism by
which the United States maintains an annual exemption from the arms embargo on
Cyprus, arguing that long-term strategic planning requires greater certainty.
